Restaurant Manager to Landscape Gardener
What made you want to change?
David Cox – Lockdown gave me some much needed time to reflect on life in general. My old work/ life balance was terrible and I knew I wanted to make the change but was unsure how to go about it
How did you make a start?
Karen and I went through several exercises which allowed me to confirm the right choice for me.
What did you use to do?
Since leaving school I have been in hospitality. I have worked in Restaurants, Pubs, Bars and Hotels.
How did you go about it?
Due to a building boom it was as simple as making a phone call. I had basic experience and a willingness to learn. I couldn’t afford to simply change jobs so I still work a couple of evenings at the pub.
What was it that helped you move forward?
Having Karen there as support was the main factor. Having someone there to encourage me was extremely important as I would always tell myself reasons not to make the jump.
What were the challenges?
It was tremendously daunting to completely change careers after 13 years in an industry that I was comfortable with. Changing jobs whilst struggling to pay bills is particularly challenging.
How long did it take?
If i’m honest with myself i should have made this change years ago. All of the what if’s had set me back and I felt a bit lost and complacent. Once I started sessions with Karen it didn’t take long at all.
What would you do differently?
I would have made the change much sooner if I realised that in reality there was nothing to fear.
What top tips would you give to someone who really wants to change career?
Go for it! The fear of a career change seems to be massively common. Life is too short to do something you don’t love.
