Last year, I worked with a number organisations supporting their staff through redundancies due to Covid-19.
I helped them work through the grief of losing their jobs, turning their focus on to their transferable skills, strengths and values. I enabled them to re-build their confidence, re-focus their minds, get their CVs updated and their LinkedIn profiles engaging. It was a lot of work and all done with a sensitive push of compassion and encouragement.
It was great to hear from so many of them later. They gradually found their feet, got new jobs and started to feel valued and regained their sense of purpose. Job done!
Today, I heard from one of those people saying he’d decided to leave his new job.
He told me, since attending my workshop, “I had re-wired his brain”! All the work he’d done exploring his values, getting to know himself and what was actually important, had made him realise he didn’t want to do the same thing anymore.
As we get older, our values shift and evolve. We start to re-prioritise what we need and what we want.
Coaching transforms your thinking, giving clarity about the possible paths forward, even in uncertain times. Safely enabling you to step in to the unknown with confidence. It’s about helping you to see things through a different filter. Firing up those thoughts and ideas can be a catalyst for change. Sometimes it’s subtle, like sewing a seed in your mind to gently remind you there are other options. Sometimes, it can be a complete epiphany, a light bulb moment that explodes with an awakening of clarity and purpose. I have witnessed these and everything else in between. That’s why I love my job!
What did my client end up doing? He became a Postman! He combined his love of the outdoors and keeping fit with his amazing customer service skills. There’s no office politics, micro-managing or being stuck on the other side of an excel spreadsheet. Yes, there’s the typical British weather to deal with, along with an average of walking in excess of 30,000 steps or 15km a day! But he’s loving it!
Whilst he might not be earning the same salary as before, his financial priorities have changed. People rarely put money as their number one priority. We all need it and we all want more, but at what cost? I’ve seen too many client’s whos’ health and wellbeing has suffered through ‘burn out’.
